Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
One snub was enough. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy demands contributions by Jude Bellingham, although it is also up to the player to adapt to the game plans and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.
The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Skill matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched England qualify at the tournament in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach discuss loving the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, he has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham possesses the edge. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. Everyone must help him and create an environment where he can [have] his drive in matches and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since March and has found it hard to perform well recently but the boss could not ignore the player after his performance in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's influence in the process.
It seems unlikely Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles helps. He is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Wharton will battle another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for years. I think it suits him the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing his club in a particular setup, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager talked about one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden netting strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to get the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” he said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be observing him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an superior one.
